Tyra turns love of cats into new profession

NCWorks NextGen Success Story: Tyra
Tyra enjoys working with animals

Recent high school graduate, Tyra, and her mom moved from Philadelphia, PA to Durham, NC in April 2019. Their hope was to secure better employment and educational opportunities to improve their lives. Eight months later, Tyra joined the #NCWorks #NextGen program where she expressed an interest in working within an administrative role and with animals.

Shortly thereafter, she began working on her pre-employment training and career assessment – which confirmed her areas of interest. She also participated in monthly professional development workshops. Then in February 2020, Tyra started an internship as a Veterinary Assistant with The Cat Hospital. This was a dream come true because of her love for cats. During her internship, she faced challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic including a reduction in hours worked. Despite this, she remained patient and optimistic about her employment. On June 1st, all of Tyra’s hard work and optimism was rewarded when she received a permanent Veterinary Assistant offer.

Tyra continues to work at The Cat Hospital and thoroughly enjoys working with her teammates and furry friends. Currently, she is taking an online Veterinary Assistant course through Durham Tech to further enhance her skills. According to Tyra, “This program has helped me get a job in my career field, make new friends and teach me new things. Right now, I look at life a little differently and I want to thank you guys for all of your help.”
